Voice
I have been teaching for 10 years and performing professionally for over 20. I received my Bachelor's of Music in Vocal Performance from DePaul University. My main focus is on building a sustainable and healthy singing technique that provides the singer with the proper tools to discover and explore vocally. I want you to sound like you, to help you find your own unique natural voice in a safe and creative environment.
Piano
The piano is a complex and flexible instrument, it can fill in a background or take center stage, it can sound as small as a music box or large as an orchestra. This versatility comes from building off the fundamentals. The piano is quite useful for teaching music theory alongside piano technique. My approach is centered on strong fundamentals that lead to freedom of expression. There are no shortcuts to success. Talent will always be outpaced by consistent hard work. Practice, practice, practice.
Songwriting
There is the artistry of interpretation and the artistry of creation. Songwriting is the latter, a way of forging something from nothing, to alchemize your thoughts, feelings, and experiences into song. I have long loved this process and enjoy sharing my process with others. Songwriting lessons are a little different from typical instrumental lessons. You will of course learn much about music theory, song structure, the technical and practical ways of writing lyrics and music. But there is a vulnerability in finding your own style, and what you want to say as an artist. I provide an open space to discuss the things you want to express with your music.
All Ages Welcome
I truly believe that music is for everyone. However, there are no shortcuts. Progress can only come from practice and time. If you're willing to put in the work, I can guarantee that you will improve. With singing in particular, but with much of music, there is a myth that "you either have it or you don't". This is not something I personally prescribe to. Many people believe themselves to be tone deaf, uncoordinated, talentless, or unteachable. Over my 10 years of teaching, I have taught students from ages 4 to 84 and each one had their strengths and weaknesses. If they showed up, tried, listened, brought what worked in their lessons home with them to practice, and put in the consistent time and energy, they always improved. If you're willing to do the work, I am ready to teach you.
